About Olumo Rock
A timeless monument. A sanctuary of strength. A symbol of unity.
Rising 137 meters above sea level, Olumo Rock is a natural wonder and the heartbeat of Abeokuta, a sacred site where history, spirituality, and culture converge. Nestled in Ikija, near the iconic Itoku Market where the famous Adire fabric is sold, Olumo Rock is a majestic outcrop of ancient granite, carved by the divine and weathered by time.
For the Egba people, Olumo Rock is a sacred refuge.
In the 19th century, during fierce inter-tribal conflicts, it offered a natural fortress—its cave-like crevices sheltering warriors, women, and children. From this place of protection and victory, a city was born. The name "Abeokuta", meaning "Under the Rock", is rooted in this moment of survival and triumph.
"Olumo" means "God has put an end to our suffering," demonstrating the spiritual and emotional bond between the people and the Rock. Since then, it has remained a revered site, a rallying point for resilience, peace, and divine providence.
Tourists and Visitors are treated to its breathtaking views and mystical aura, as well as to the legends etched in its walls—stories of courage, kinship, and cultural pride. Hidden within its ridges are an Iroko tree that never withers and a Baobab tree that mysteriously thrives far from the savannah—two wonders that defy nature's expectations.
As the new home of the Nike Art Gallery in Abeokuta, Olumo Rock becomes even more vibrant.
It unites the ancient with the contemporary and heritage with creativity. Here, the Rock speaks through its silence and the art it now holds.
